Liverpool’s defence has been shaky on numerous occasion this season. Jurgen Klopp had made multiple attempts to fix the issue in the summer. But the Merseyside were caught in a tapping-up issue with Southampton for Virgil Van Dijk.
The winter transfer window is just around the corner and Klopp is in desperate need of a centre-back to bring some success to Anfield this season. The Reds were miserably routed 4-1 at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur earlier this evening with the defensive line being extremely sloppy.
Here are five options the Reds could look to sign in January to plunge their leaky defence –
1) Yeray Alvarez (Athletic Bilbao)
22 year old, Alvarez has played in the shadows of his team-mate, Laporte. He became a regular member of the Basque-based club last season, making 35 appearances. The Spaniard was diagnosed with testicular cancer midway through the season. However, he recovered and made a strong finish in his breakthrough season.
Alvarez was linked with a move to Barcelona at the end of last season. According to reports, Bilbao wanted €30 million to part ways with the youngster.
Alvarez is known for bringing out the ball from the back and could indeed turn out to be a long-term solution for Klopp.
2) Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen)
Tipped to be the next best defender for the Germans, Tah has been on Klopp’s radar previously. During the gaffers time at Dortmund, there were reports that the player was scouted by the Liverpool boss’ request.
Aged 21, the central defender has already spent three seasons in the Bundesliga. Crossing 75 appearances mark this season, Tah has been a highlight for Bayer Leverkusen. He has already acquired a wonderful range of skill sets at such a young age which makes him a perfect fit for Liverpool.
3) Clement Lenglet (Sevilla)
Another French starlet who has helped his side make a push to the top this season. 22 year old made the move to Sevilla last January for a mere fee of €5 million. He has featured in almost every game since August and his side are in 2nd place on the league table.
One of the best readers of the game, Lenglet is known for interceptions and tackles. He also boasts the ability to build play from the back, thereby having a high pass percentage. The former Nancy player would be a smart option for the Reds as they could lure him out for a reasonable price.
4) Mattia Caldara (Atalanta/Juventus)
Caldara was one of the stars at Atalanta last season. His exploits in the defence saw him earn a move to Juventus last January. But the Old Lady decided to send him back on a loan move until the end of this season.
The Italian centre-back is a big presence in the heart of the defence. But he is also known for his goal on the other end of the pitch.
In 31 appearances last season, Caldara managed to find the back of the net 7 times. Liverpool has missed the likes of Strkel who would threaten the opposite on both ends. This 22-year old youngster could fill the big boots in the coming years.
5) Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham Hotspur)
No Liverpool transfer list is complete with a reference to a Southampton lad. Toby Alderweireld made his mark in the Premier League with a spell with the Saints during the 2014-15 season. After 28 appearances that season, Tottenham Hotspur brought him to England permanently.
The Belgian is currently one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. He possesses the leadership skills that could bring the best of Liverpool’s current set of defenders.
However, negotiating with Daniel Levy would be a massive struggle. Over that, it is selling to a rival club which is an idea that he has never been open to.
