In the fixture of the weekend, Chelsea were up against league leaders, Manchester City. The Londoners were looking to put an end to Pep Guardiola’s unbeaten run. But Antonio Conte’s plans failed due to a very familiar face.
Kevin De Bruyne’s 67th minute was enough to defeat Conte’s lack-lustre side on Saturday. Fatigue seemed to be the case for Chelsea. Both teams were playing their 3rd game in a week’s time.
In the Champions League, Manchester City was up against an easier opponent in the form of Shakhtar Donetsk whereas Chelsea faced Atletico Madrid.
Conte’s men were made to toil hard and managed to pick up a victory in spectacular fashion as Batshuayi found the back of the net in the dying minutes of the game.
In the post-match conference, the Blues gaffer revealed that his side failed to recover for the game in time. He added that Manchester City is one of his toughest opponents in the Premier League.
In this type of game you need time to recover, if you are tired it is not simple to go box to box.
It was a tough game but we know very well that Manchester City are a big team and it’s very difficult to play this type of game.
Antonio Conte revealed that he was proud of his players despite the loss as they came up against a strong team on the given day.
I think that we gave everything today and I am happy with the commitment and desire from all my players. They had the will to fight against a very strong team.
The Italian boss added that Chelsea managed to create chances throughout the game. But their opponents were one step ahead as they converted their opportunities to win the fixture.
Today we created chances but we didn’t take them. Manchester City had chances and they took them.
Antonio Conte was aware that he had to risk his players for the game as some of them were playing for the 3rd time this week. Morata was pulled out in the 35th minute due to a hamstring injury. He believes that the player will be back soon as it is not a ‘serious’ one.
It is logical when you play three games in seven days you risk something. I hope it is not a serious injury for Morata. It is his hamstring but we don’t know if it is a serious problem.
We move on, we rest and I am very proud to be the coach of these players.
The teams now head into the international break and will be hoping that their players come back safely. Some of the countries will be important games in the coming weeks as the race to World Cup reaches its final stage.
After the break, Chelsea will be facing table bottom dwellers, Crystal Palace. The Eagles are yet to score in the Premier League this season. Antonio Conte will be expecting to get back on track with a victory to defend his Premier League title.
