Leeds United have been after Liverpool striker Danny Ings for quite some time now. Leeds gaffer, Thomas Christiansen, has been prioritizing a striker for his team to chip in with the goals after his side parted ways with Chris Wood, their highest goal scorer last season.
While Ings would be a terrific addition to the Championship outfit, doubts still linger over his ability to stay fit over an entire campaign.
The former Burnley man has not been able to make appearances for a long stretch of time and that might be a deal breaker for a side who need goals week in week out to get promoted to the Premier League.
As a result, Leeds United might turn their attention to Dwight Gayle, the Newcastle United striker. Gayle has been part of Rafa Benitez’s setup for some time now but has not been able to cement his place in the Magpies first team due to the competition among the forwards.
The 26-year-old has only two starts in the new Premier League season and four substitute appearances from the bench.
Gayle was one of the best strikers in the Championship last season as he was outscored only by the league’s best striker, Wood, when he went past the 23 goals that Gayle managed in the season.
Leeds United still do not possess the funds required to sanction a permanent deal for the English footballer but a loan deal could be on the cards. Even if Liverpool agree to send Ings on to a loan to a Championship side, Christiansen would be better off to try and strive towards brokering a deal with the Magpies instead for Gayle.
Gayle’s experience in the Championship and his proven record make him a much better alternative than the injury-prone Danny Ings any day.
