Steven Gerrard delivered a big injury update on two of his key players in Borna Barisic and Ovie Ejaria. While the Liverpool loanee could feature in Gers’ next fixture against St. Johnstone, Barisic will remain on the sidelines.

The Teddy Bears have picked up eight points from their five games so far in the Scottish Premiership. Although they haven’t looked convincing at the back always, Gerrard has infused a new-looking system orchestrated by a blend of youth and experienced players.

They came back from behind not once but twice to restore parity and salvage a point against Villarreal in the Europa League opener. Gerrard, who was immensely impressed with his side’s performance.

“It was a fantastic performance, but we have a lot to learn from and improve on. It’s my responsibility to instil that belief and certainly scoring two goals against a top team, especially after going behind twice, has to give them confidence,” he said, after the match.

Regarding the weekend’s fixture, he elaborated:

“Sunday is more important in my eyes than Villarreal. Villarreal was a massive match, but the league is the priority. I want my players to be ruthless and relentless, which is why I was hard on them after the match. When we smell blood I want us to go for teams.”

He then gave an update on Ejaria’s and Barisic’s injury. “Ejaria has a good chance of being involved, but Borna might struggle. He’s been sent for a scan on his hamstring and is a big doubt,” Gerrard commented. While Ejaria is out with a knee strain, Barisic sustained a hamstring injury last time out.

The former Liverpool midfielder also believes there is a room for improvement besides the positives. Their game against St. Johnstone commences on Sunday at 15:00 local time. Whether Ovie Ejaria will start or not, remains a talking point.
